 πŸ“„ 2042 Top 25 Rankings: Update Jan 2nd

The updated CBGM Top #25 Poll is out. Check out who’s in the top 5, the top 10!

The Headliners

  • Georgetown Hoyas (13–4) hold firm at No. 1, showing consistency despite the four losses. Their rΓ©sumΓ© must be built on big wins.

  • Notre Dame (13–1) jumps into the No. 2 spot, moving past Louisville. The Fighting Irish are quietly becoming one of the hottest teams in the country.

  • Louisville (12–3) slips to No. 3 after a stumble, but they’re still firmly in the title chase.

Teams on the Rise

  • Saint Mary’s (14–3) makes the biggest leap in the top 10, climbing four spots to No. 6. They’re stringing together statement wins.

  • Baylor (12–3) up two spots to No. 10, putting themselves back into the top-tier conversation.

  • Creighton (13–2) and UNLV (11–2) both jump three places, sitting at No. 16 and No. 17. They’re right on the edge of breaking into the top 15 if the trend continues.

  • San Diego State (12–2) and Illinois (12–3) each climb three spots, landing at No. 20 and No. 23.

  • South Dakota State (13–1) enters the Top 25 at No. 25, a huge accomplishment for the Jackrabbits and a sign that mid-majors are cracking through.

Teams Slipping

  • Princeton (14–3) falls four spots to No. 13 after a setback. Their record is strong, but the pollsters clearly weren’t impressed with the loss.

  • Kentucky (10–5) drops four spots to No. 21, looking shaky compared to their usual standards.

  • Maryland (8–6) tumbles three places to No. 19, and they’re barely hanging on in the rankings with that many losses.

  • Texas (11–3), Wichita State (12–3), Florida State (13–2) β€” all slide one spot, punished slightly for recent results.

Holding Steady

  • Georgetown (No. 1), Miami (No. 4), Gonzaga (No. 11), USC (No. 14), UNC (No. 15), LSU (No. 22) β€” all hold their ground. These programs remain respected, but the pollsters are waiting for a statement win to bump them higher.

Takeaway

The Top 25 is tightening. Teams like Georgetown, Notre Dame, and Louisville remain the powerhouses, but mid-majors like Saint Mary’s, Creighton, and South Dakota State are climbing. Meanwhile, Princeton and Kentucky are trending down, with Maryland dangerously close to falling out of the poll altogether.
